Nordic combined, as the name says, combines
ski jumping and cross country ski competitions. First the ski jumping, followed
by the cross country race. Both competitions are held according to the general
rules of the two disciplines.
Ski jumping:
Each athlete jumps three times, but only the two best results count for
the final ranking.
The evaluation methods are similar to those for normal ski jumping competitions,
the only difference being that there are five judges and each one may give
a maximum of 20 points
The highest and lowest scores are discarded,
so an athlete can score no more than 60 points.
Cross country
skiing:
The start position for the cross country ski race depends on the ski jumping
ranking. The best jumper will leave first, followed by the others in decreasing
order, according to the Gundersen method.
To reckon the time difference at the start
line between one athlete and the next, a 1.5 point difference in the ski
jump ranking is transformed into 10 seconds.
The first athlete to reach the finish line is the winner.
