This is an Olympic and World Cup event
involving combined competition in Jumping and a subsequent Cross Country
Ski race. It was one of the first Nordic disciplines to be introduced in
the Winter Olympics. Nordic Combined, in fact, boasts a very long tradition
in Nordic skiing and is a spectacular event, still practised only by men.
Following is an overview of the history of Nordic Combined.
About 1900:
The Norwegians have always been the greatest supporters of Nordic Combined,
because it represented the true essence of winter sports and should, therefore,
be protected and promoted. 1950: Originally, the cross
country ski race was held first followed by the ski jumping. About 1960: To exploit its
spectacular potential, the order of the competitions was reversed: first
the ski jumping and then the cross country ski race, in order to prevent
the time differences in the cross country ski race diminishing the interest
for the ski jumping event, which rarely produced spectacular changes in
the ranking.
